The Australian Multicultural Women’s Alliance (AMWA) is the national voice for multicultural women. AMWA is led is by the Federation of Ethnic Communities’ Councils of Australia (FECCA), the national peak body representing Australians from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds in partnership with Settlement Services International (SSI) and Media Diversity Australia (MDA).

We advocate for gender equity, representation, and inclusion across all facets of Australian society. Our work is informed by lived experiences, community insights, and evidence-based research to ensure that systemic barriers are addressed and opportunities for women are unlocked.

As an intersectional alliance, we aim to empower women from all multicultural backgrounds to thrive and contribute fully to Australia’s prosperity.

Our mission is to advance the rights, amplify the voices, and improve the well-being of multicultural* women through innovative advocacy, intersectional collaboration, and leadership development. We strive to leverage best practice domestically and internationally, build the Alliance’s profile and influence, and ensure that lived experiences and formal expertise drive transformative social change.

*When making reference to “multicultural”, we refer to migrant, refugee, culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) and racialised women.

Our Objectives

Build the Alliance Profile and Influence

Elevate the profile and credibility of the Alliance through strategic branding, media engagement, and participation in high-level forums, positioning it as a thought leader and trusted partner in advancing gender equity.

Challenge Systemic and Structural Barriers

Advocate for the removal of systemic and structural barriers that disproportionately impact migrant, refugee, and CALD women, ensuring they have equal access to opportunities, resources, and decision-making spaces. This includes addressing discriminatory policies, institutional biases, and socio-economic barriers that hinder full participation in society.

Centre Marginalised Voices

Increase the inclusion and participation of the most marginalised groups, including women from refugee backgrounds, rural areas, and underrepresented linguistic and cultural communities, in all Alliance initiatives.

Foster Intersectional Advocacy

Promote an intersectional approach that recognises how overlapping identities and experiences of discrimination shape the challenges faced by women, ensuring our advocacy is inclusive and reflective of diverse realities

Collaborate to Amplify Voices

Proactively engage and partner with government bodies, other alliances, researchers, community leaders, and international stakeholders to amplify the voices of migrant, refugee, and culturally and linguistically diverse women, ensuring they shape policies and programs that affect them.

Engage Allies in Solutions

In key policy areas, such as gender-based violence, work with men to challenge harmful attitudes and stereotypes, fostering community-wide cultural change.

Drive Cross-Sector and Global Innovation

Engage stakeholders beyond traditional sectors, including private industry, academia, and international organisations, to introduce innovative approaches and culturally responsive solutions that address systemic barriers and promote equity.

Build Leadership Pathways

Establish leadership pathways for women from migrant, refugee, and culturally diverse backgrounds to enable their meaningful participation in decision-making spaces at all levels.

Promote Economic Empowerment

Advocate for systemic reforms and targeted initiatives to improve economic security, career pathways, and financial independence for culturally diverse women.

Drive Evidence-Based Innovation

Commission research and leverage community-led insights to address knowledge gaps and ensure policies and programs are informed by robust evidence.

Amplify Impact through Strategic Resources

Seek opportunities to further amplify the Alliance’s reach and impact by accessing strategic resources, fostering partnerships, and demonstrating the measurable value of its work.

Harness and Build Networks

Leverage the existing networks of community organisations and key stakeholders to ensure formal expertise and lived experience inform evidence-based advocacy and policy development. Expand and strengthen national and international networks to foster collaboration, share best practices, and amplify impact.

Like the intricate patterns found in traditional textiles across cultures, our community is made up of diverse threads, each representing a lived experience, a heritage, a voice. When woven together, they form something stronger, more colourful, and more powerful than any single thread alone.

Our logomark represents the interwoven nature of cultural identities, drawing inspiration from the rich traditions of textile weaving. At its core is the diamond–a motif found in many cultural designs–symbolising strength, unity, and balance, and reflecting the resilience and dignity of the women we represent. Like a kaleidoscope, the mark captures an ever-evolving landscape, where mirrored reflections honour the beauty of diversity and the harmony within it.
